We are so close now, we can taste it.
We watched the kilometer markers count down today with a mix of excitement, pride, and sadness. We’ve been at this so long now that it feels surreal to think of doing anything but walking all day every day.
We walked through a beautiful eucalyptus forest, and we started the day just having fun with Addie, hiding her little Rebecca Rabbit toy and letting her search for it along the trail. We sang songs together. We danced.
At the distant rumble of thunder, we set Addie in the stroller and began to walk quickly. The thunder stopped, but the rain came down in buckets. Even with our ponchos, Sandra and I were soaked. The stroller rain cover held up well, though, and the girls stayed dry.
We stopped at a café to try to wait out the rain, but it became clear that was futile.
The rain cleared around the time we stopped for lunch, and it was sunny by the time we reached our final guesthouse where we relaxed until dinner.
We passed the 10-kilometer countdown marker and we are in the single digits now.
It was important for us to be able to say we walked every step of the last 100 kilometers from Sarria, and we are proud that we will be able to say we did that.
We have 9 kilometers to go. Nothing’s stopping us now.
What a wonderful day this day sounds like! The pictures, as always, take us along with you. Thank you for the extraordinary effort this must have been to write and send us pictures every day since you started; not just on the many good days, but through the tired and sick times you 4 have all experienced . I know i was grateful to hear from you, and follow you along. I feel like i was almost there in the day to day. When you say you are actually in Santiago, i just may lose it. May the final few miles be everything you thought it would be!
I am so excited for all you. We will be cheering from New York as you take your final strides today!!
So, so happy for you. What a crazy, stressful, amazing, wonderful journey you have been on. Enjoy your (more relaxing) final days before you return home 🏡
What an accomplishment. Well done and also to the little ones for doing it. Seems the little ones smile most days as life is an adventure to them . We should all enjoy each day and the adventure. I am sure you all are looking forward to your home and beds and food.
I can only echo everyone else’s comments. We have truly enjoyed your blog, you put us right there, rain or shine.
Addie looks like a little wood elf chatting with her rabbit. How strange to think less than 10km to go. It’s been tough at times but each time you have battled through to the good times. From the comfort of my lounge room and with a cup of coffee, I have been thoroughly enjoying your camino.
